The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has urged Muslims and Christians to use the fasting period to cultivate empathy, kindness and good neighbourliness.

He spoke on Sunday at a Ramadan prayer organised by the United Muslim Council of Nigeria, Mushin Division, in Ogba, Lagos.

The deputy governor described the fasting period as vital to building a better nation.

He said Ramadan promotes unity and understanding, urging Nigerians of all faiths to live up to the true expectations of their religions.

He stated, “For us as Muslims, the month of Ramadan is special and its essence is to enhance our creation, which is to worship Almighty God.”

Mr Hamzat explained that Ramadan teaches empathy for the hungry and less privileged, encouraging believers to become better neighbours and responsible citizens.

“Ramadan links us closer to God, helps us deal better with humanity, and teaches empathy in our daily interactions,” he said.

Citing Prophet Muhammad, he added: “You will never be a Muslim if your neighbours cannot live in peace with you.”

He urged Nigerians to care for their communities and environment, stressing that such conduct reflects the true essence of religion.

“Let us live up to what we profess. Whether Muslim or Christian, our faith teaches us to be good neighbours,” he said.
