Police launch investigation into killing of woman in Rivers

The police command in Rivers says it has commenced an investigation into the murder of a woman, Special Bensington.
The spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, told journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Friday that the victim was killed on March 21.
Ms Iringe-Koko stated that the incident occurred at the Total Gospel area, off Odili Road, and was reported at the Abuloma Police Division by a resident, Divine Anyanwu.
According to her, Ms Basington had boarded a ride-hailing vehicle from an unnamed hotel on Emmanuel Street, Odili Road, in Port Harcourt.
“While en route, she was attacked by armed hoodlums suspected to have trailed her from the hotel,” she said.
Ms Iringe-Koko explained that the assailants, who were in a tricycle, popularly known as “Keke,” opened fire on the victim.
“During the attack, the victim sustained gunshot injuries and was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where she died while receiving treatment,” she said.
The police spokesperson said the victim’s remains had been deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy and that the police command has launched a full investigation into the killing.
Ms Iringe-Koko further stated that the case had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation.
“Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. I assure members of the public that those responsible for this act will be brought to justice,” she said.
Ms Iringe-Koko urged residents to provide information to support the investigation and assured them that timely updates would be provided as the investigation progressed.
