The Anambra State House of Assembly says it passed 45 bills into law in the past three years.

The Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, made the disclosure in Awka on Thursday while briefing journalists on the assembly’s achievements after three years of legislative activities.

Mr Udeze said that members of the house exuded unity, vibrancy, and commitment to the welfare of Anambra people.

“During the period, the assembly took deliberate steps to enthrone positive change in governance and the wellbeing of the people,” he said.

The speaker stated that out of the 45 bills passed by the house, 42 had been signed into law by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

He further said that the house passed no fewer than 90 motions during the period under review.

“The house received 100 petitions during the period. So far, we have resolved about 16 of them,” he said.

Mr Udeze listed the Local Government Administration Bill and the Homeland Security Bill as two major bills passed by the assembly during the period.

He said that the Local Government Administration Bill was aimed at strengthening local government autonomy and improving fund management through the consolidated account system.

The speaker said that the Homeland Security Bill would address security challenges in the state.

“The bills passed through rigorous legislative scrutiny before they were passed. Our interest is to improve the wellbeing of Anambra people,” he said.

Mr Udeze reiterated the assembly’s commitment to performing its oversight functions to ensure effective governance and service delivery.

He said that efforts were underway to establish a digital library and build an additional administrative block within the assembly complex.

He expressed confidence that the assembly would continue to strengthen democracy and encourage greater public participation in the lawmaking process.
