Investigations have begun into an accident in which a motorist rammed his vehicle into a crowd of Mexican football team supporters at a tourist resort in Cabo San Lucas, in Baja California Sur, on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the supporters were celebrating Mexico’s 3-0 World Cup victory over Czechia when the accident happened, injuring 17 people, including the driver, who was arrested and has been taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Authorities in Los Cabos, in a statement, said, “According to preliminary information, the vehicle was surrounded by a group of people and, for reasons to be determined ‌by the competent ‌authority, drove through the crowd, injuring several people.”

Secretary-General of the Los Cabos City Council, Alberto Rentería Santana, also in a statement, stated that the incident occurred “during a massive gathering of citizens”.

He added that the driver, “upon finding themselves surrounded by people who were blocking the way and exerting physical pressure on their vehicle, executed a sudden acceleration manoeuvre, causing several pedestrians to be struck.”

Meanwhile, Los Cabos’s acting mayor, José Manuel Larumbe, expresses sympathy to the victims and their families.

“I would ‌like to express our deepest solidarity with the people affected and their families following the unfortunate events that occurred tonight,” he said.

Mr Larumber vowed to keep the public informed as investigations into the incident continue.

The Mexican Football Federation, in a post on social media, expressed deep regret at the incident and urged relevant authorities to “clarify what happened and determine the corresponding responsibilities.”
