Days after forced marriage, teenager arrested for killing husband
The police in Adamawa have arrested a teenager, Rumasa’u Muhammed, of Wuro Yanka in the Shelleng local government area for stabbing her husband to death.
Police spokesman Sulaiman Nguroje, on Wednesday in Yola, stated, “The suspect was arrested on Monday for allegedly stabbing her husband, Muhammed Adamu, 35, to death after seeking a divorce.”
Mr Nguroje added, ”Investigation so far reveals that the suspect was forcefully married to the deceased by her parents against her will on August 6.”
Police commissioner Aliyu Alhaji has given a directive for a discreet investigation into the matter, according to Mr Nguroje.
”The commissioner has equally advised members of the public to stop forcing their wards into early and forceful marriages,” the police spokesman further stated. ”In the same vein, the commissioner has directed for the immediate prosecution of the suspect so as to serve as a deterrent to others.”
Speaking on the alleged murder, Abdullah Hamman, an Islamic scholar, said forced marriage had no place in Islam.
“According to Islam, parents have the right to choose a good family to marry from for their children. But at the same time, Islam does not encourage forced marriages,” Mr Hamman said.
He stressed the need for the parents to desist from forced marriage, saying such practice is causing a lot of harm in society.
“The girl demanded that her late husband divorce her peacefully since she was not interested in the marriage. He refused,” said a source close to the family source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. ”Angered after several requests, she picked up a knife and stabbed him in the stomach. He was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.”
