Flood and landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains have resulted in the deaths of about 100 people and displacement of thousands others across India.

Officials said the seasonal rainfall, believed to be beneficial to farmers, led to devastations including 87 deaths in Assam and 47 deaths recorded in Sivasagar district.

The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, said its impact was heavy “unlike anything these areas have witnessed before.”

Mr Sarma added, “Material losses can be restored, but no compensation can replace a loved one.”

In the Indian southern state of Kerala, 15 deaths were recorded, while seven people were yet to be found, following rains that lasted several days.

The chief minister of Kerala, Vadassery Satheesan, said the heavy monsoon resulted in 10,000 people sheltering in over 300 relief camps in the state.

In Jammu and Kashmir, over 31 people were reportedly killed following extreme rainfall.

India Meteorological Department, on Wednesday, warned residents in districts including Meghalaya, Assam, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttrakhand and Punjab to stay at alert and take necessary precautions ahead of lightning or thunderstorms with gusty winds predicted to occur.
