Emmanuel Ugboaja, the general secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), died.

He was 60.

The death of the labour activist was conveyed by NLC president, Joe Ajaero, to the union’s national executive council during an ongoing meeting in Enugu.

Mr Ajaero, who referenced a letter he received from Mr Ugboaja’s family, said the unionist passed away after a prolonged illness.

The deceased, who became the fifth general secretary of the NLC in 2019, was a veteran trade unionist and lawyer.

Mr Ugboaja, born on May 15, 1966, studied law at the University of Calabar in 1987 and actively joined the trade union movement in 1993.

He was a member of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, and served as its general secretary between 2000 and 2005.

He was the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union.
