The Bauchi State police command says it arrested a 70-year-old man over the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in Tsakanin Bayara area of Bauchi metropolis.

Nafiu Habib, the command’s spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday that the sexual harassment was reported on Wednesday at about 11:30 p.m. by the victim’s father.

He stated that on Sunday, at about 11:00 a.m., Usman Abubakar, 70, allegedly lured an eight-year-old to an uncompleted building in the area where he had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.

Mr Habib said officers of the E Division, Yelwa, promptly swung into action and arrested the suspect, noting that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.

“The victim was immediately taken to the police clinic for medical examination and care,” Mr Habib said.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the act in strong terms and assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and the suspect charged to court in accordance with the law.

He said the case is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Bauchi, for discreet investigation and prosecution.
