Ember Months: FRSC begins public enlightenment in Ogun
The Ogun State command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has stepped up public awareness and traffic law enforcement to make roads safer during the ember months.
The public relations officer (PRO), Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, on Monday in Ota.
According to Mr Odunsi, the FRSC has also partnered with transport unions, communities and security agencies to reduce carnage during this period.He reiterated the command’s commitment to continue spreading the safety message and educating the public on the importance of life and that every life counts.
“As we enter the ember months, September to December, we often witness a rise in road traffic, thus resulting in an increase in road crashes.
“Together, we can make these ember months safe for every Nigerian, if only the necessary measures are embraced by everyone.
“No matter how committed FRSC is, we must all play our part by obeying road signs, use seat belts and protect the passengers,” he said.
The PRO debunked the myth that those months had supernatural influence, saying, ”The real causes of accidents are human factors.
”He identified those human factors to include fatigue, overloading, poor vehicle maintenance, and the rush to meet end-of-year goals.
Mr Odunsi urged motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with FRSC personnel, as special patrols had already been deployed to the highway to check compliance with speed limits.
He added that the rescue teams would be working round the clock to ensure quick response to emergencies, saying pre-trip inspections are ongoing in motor parks.
Mr Odunsi also urged drivers to avoid alcohol, night journeys, and rest when tired, to prevent unnecessary loss of life during the ember months.
He implored motorists to service their vehicles and reduce speed, noting that safety is a shared responsibility for everyone during, before, and after the months.
Mr Odunsi said, ”Arriving late is better than not arriving at all.”
