Arsenal’s young talent Max Dowman scored twice as the Gunners beat Ipswich Town 4-2 at Portman Road, and Liverpool eliminated Spurs in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday at Anfield.

Dowman found the back of the net in the seventh minute with a composed finish to give Arsenal the lead, with Eberechi Eze providing the assist.

Noni Madueke made it 2-0 for Mikel Arteta’s side off a well-worked solo effort from the English international.

Dowman was back on the scoresheet after the break, extending Arsenal’s lead and scoring his second goal of the night after Martin Zubimendi’s assist. He became the second 16-year-old, after Wayne Rooney, to score two goals in a game for a Premier League side in all competitions.

In the 58th minute, Mikel Merino made it 4-0, firing a left-footed effort into the bottom-left corner as Bruno Guimarães picked out the World Cup winner.

The Tractor Boys pulled one back with a goal from Anis Mehmeti, with Jack Clarke securing an assist. In stoppage time, Chuba Akpom shocked with an incredible goal, assisted by Leif Davis.

At Anfield, Liverpool opened the scoring with a stunner from Alexis Mac Allister in the 21st minute. Cody Gakpo fired the Reds’ second goal of the night with a brilliant effort as Mac Allister set up the Dutch forward to double the advantage for the hosts.

The Spurs reduced the deficit in the 69th minute from a set piece by Mateus Fernandes, allowing Conor Gallagher to head it home for the visitors, marking the club’s first goal of the new season after four games.

Liverpool increased their lead to 3-1 as the Reds’ long-range Dominik Szoboszlai scored an amazing volley from 35 yards to seal the victory as his side advances to the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Elsewhere in Tuesday’s third-round fixtures, Fulham edged West Ham 3-2,  English League One side Peterborough eliminated Barnsley 7-6 on penalties after a six-goal thriller, while Brentford beat Reading 2-1.
