The police command in Ondo State has arrested a driver, Ayoade Idowu, over the death of Sesan Adediji, an officer of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), in Akure.

In a statement on Friday, the command’s spokesman, Abayomi Jimoh, said the incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure.

The 35-year-old officer reportedly died in the incident.

Mr Jimoh said preliminary information indicated the incident involved a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX, driven by Ayoade Idowu, 37.

“The victim, who was reportedly on routine patrol with his team, was said to have flagged down the vehicle for a routine inspection of its particulars.

“The driver initially stopped but allegedly drove off when asked to produce the relevant documents, hitting the VIO official in the process,” he said.

The police said the victim sustained serious head injuries and was immediately rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where he was subsequently confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

He said the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

According to him, the driver had been arrested and detained while preliminary investigations were ongoing. He added that police operatives had visited the scene and commenced investigations.

He said the case file would be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.
