The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Florence Obi, has cautioned the staff against collecting unauthorised fees from new students.

Ms Obi gave the warning in a statement issued by the university’s registrar, Gabriel Egbe, on Wednesday in Calabar.

”The attention of the university’s management has been drawn to reports alleging that members of staff are extorting money from new students,” said the statement. ”Management has cautioned against this unwholesome and unethical practice. It is wrong and condemnable.”

The vice-chancellor noted that the university’s staff should properly guide students instead of extorting them.

Ms Obi added that the university management would deal decisively with any staff found soliciting or collecting illegal fees from new students.

“Management shall closely monitor the activities of staff, and erring staff shall be adequately sanctioned,” the university warned.
