Powerline collapse near petroleum pipeline sparks wild fire in Lagos

The fire affected shanties and buildings nearby, but no casualty was recorded from the fire incidents, The Gazette learnt.

A massive fire on Friday burnt down vehicles and buildings in the Egbeda area of Lagos. A powerline that collapsed at Isale Odo along LASU road ignited a pipeline, causing an explosion.

Peoples Gazette learnt that a high tension cable from Egbin Hydro Power Plant suddenly collapsed and the sparks got to the spilled petroleum around the area. The pipeline caught fire and and an explosion ensued.

The fire affected shanties and buildings nearby, but no casualty was recorded from the fire incidents, The Gazette learnt.

Emergency responders have been able to contain the fire and prevent it from further spreading.

Giving an update on the development, the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) said, â€œResidents of Igando, Idimu Axis are strongly advised to observe serious safety precautions due to the collapse.”

NEMA representative Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed that emergency responders were at the site to put out the fire.

Last week, a market in Lagos was razed by fire; properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.
