The BBC says Sudanese security forces arrested three of its journalist during a protest in Khartoum, the country’s capital, on Monday.

The British media organisation in a report disclosed that journalists working with its Arabic service were arrested and taken to an undisclosed location in the country’s capital on Monday.

Monday’s uprising is one of a series of protests held against the military since the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

However, the situation escalated when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government on October 25, reinstating him a month later after heavy international pressure.

It deteriorated further after Mr Hamdok on January 2 stepped down following his failure to broker peace between the military and the pro-democracy movement. 

The pro-democracy movement said thousands of citizens have continued to march against military rule.

Giving an account of the conduct of the military during the protest, Nazim Sirag a pro-democracy activist alleged that security forces shot live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Mr Sirag disclosed that 200 protesters were injured. He said at least 12 of the 200 injured protesters sustained gunshot wounds, however, no death was recorded.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the BBC said the arrested journalists have regained their freedom.

“The Sudanese authorities released the BBC Arabic team, delegated to Sudan, hours after their arrest while working in Khartoum, on Monday,” BBC tweeted had tweeted.
