Four police officers lost their lives on Tuesday when the convoy of Works minister Babatunde Fashola and Chief of Staff Ibrahim Gambari crashed during the inspection tour of the Second Niger bridge.

Punch newspaper reports that the incident occurred when the minister went to inspect ongoing construction of the bridge in Asaba, Delta State on Tuesday.

The vehicle  conveying the top government official’s security details lost control, crashing into a pit, the report said.

A witness John Okorie said the accident happened when the vehicle conveying the victims was trying to take a tur leading to the construction site of the Second Niger Bridge at the Asaba end.

Reports further detailed that the police vehicle was rushing to meet up with the minister’s vehicles before the crash.

A bus driver with Delta Line driver disclosed that he was behind the police vehicle before the crash.

“The policeman driver was speeding and while negotiating the bend because of the speed could not control the vehicle. They crashed into a deep pit. I was at the back of the convoy, driving slowly,” he said

“With the help of other people, we rescued four of them but they were badly injured. They were shouting as the vehicle fell on them,” he added.
