Members of the organised labour unions will embark on strike should the Kano government refuse to rescind its earlier decision to jettison the 30,000 minimum wage agreement reached last year. 

The Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) made up of the NLC and TUC disclosed on Friday that the union bodies will not take a pay cut as being proposed by the government. 

Kabiru Ado Mingibir, the state’s NLC leader criticized the government’s decision to slash workers’ salaries despite the economic impact on the masses.

On Wednesday, Kano announced that it would be reverting to the N18,000 minimum wage, pinning the reason for the pay cuts on the recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced allocation from the federal government. 

The information commissioner, Muhammed Garba, clarified that the pay cuts were taken with the welfare of the workers in mind, as opposed to part payment of salaries, batch payments and laying off of staff.

Last year, the Kano State Government for the fourth time as at November deducted from civil servants’ salaries and pensioners allowances without providing reasons for the deduction, despite agreeing to implement the new minimum wage of N30,000 signed into law in 2019.
