Deborah: Bishop Kukah cancels Catholic masses in Sokoto
Amid the lingering religious tension in Sokoto state, Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has cancelled all masses in the state metropolis.
Sokoto witnessed violent protests on Saturday as Islamic extremists hit the streets, demanding release of their brothers who killed a Christian student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Deborah Samuel.
In a statement signed by the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto spokesperson, Christopher A. Omotosho, Mr Kukah said “All masses in Sokoto metropolis have been suspended until the curfew is lifted.”
While commending Governor Amimu Tambuwal for “promptly declaring the 24-hours curfew to stem the protests,” Mr Kukah urged Christians in the state to be law abiding.
Peoples Gazette had on Thursday reported how Ms Samuel was mobbed at the school’s security post by angry Muslim colleagues and students who hit her repeatedly with sticks and stones before setting her ablaze, a development widely condemned by Nigerians.
