Two men arraigned over alleged theft, assault
The police on Tuesday arraigned two persons, Thomas Ikechukwu and Charles Emeka, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged conspiracy, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, assault and stealing.
The defendants, Mr Ikechukwu, 35 and Mr Emeka, 26; whose addresses were not provided, are facing an eight-count charge, bordering on conspiracy, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, obtaining by false pretence, stealing, obstruction of police officers, assault and malicious damage.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The police prosecutor, Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences at about 4:00 p.m., on August 14, in Ado-Ekiti.
Mr Oriyomi alleged that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by constituting nuisance in a public place.
He also alleged that Mr Emeka and another person at large obtained an iPhone 16, valued at N1.1million, from Mr Ikechukwu, under false pretence with intent to defraud.
According to him, Mr Ikechukwu also stole phone accessories, valued at N800,000, property of Mr Emeka.
The prosecutor also alleged that Mr Ikechukwu and others at large obstructed Olujobi Ifedayo and his team while executing their lawful duties.
He alleged that they assaulted Musa Mohammed by spitting saliva on his face while he was performing his lawful duty.
Mr Oriyomi also alleged that the defendants assaulted Adaramodu Raphael and Kolawole Goodness while they were executing their lawful duties.
He further alleged that the defendants maliciously damaged a Tecno Spark 4.0 handset, valued at ₦295,000, belonging to Musa Mohammed.
According to him, the offences contravened the provisions of sections 422,181(1)(d) 329(1)(3)302(1)(a)187(b) 363 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The counsel for the defendants, Luke Mbam, urged the court to grant the defendants bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adosun, thereafter, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
Mr Adosun later adjourned the case until September 29 for hearing.
