Scotland has recorded a record low in its unemployment figures for Q1 of 2022,

A report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the country’s unemployment rate for people above the age of 16 was 3.2 per cent between January and March, down by 0.9 per cent.

“For January to March 2022, Scotland’s estimated employment rate rose over the quarter to 75.6 per cent while the estimated unemployment rate fell to a record low of 3.2 per cent,” Richard Lochhead, the Minister of Employment said. “While we continue to face economic challenges, with the rising cost of living, the negative effects of Brexit and the economic impacts of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Scottish government remains committed to doing all we can to help our economy recover.”

The employment rate for those aged 16 to 64 was 75.6 per cent, an increase of 1.4 per cent. Those not employed and not actively seeking work are considered “economically inactive.”

Scotland recorded 2.682 million people aged 16 and over in employment between January and March this year, and 88,000 people in that age group were unemployed.

Mr Lochlead noted that about £113 million had been allocated to employability services, “including £60 million for No One Left Behind and additional investment in the parental employability support fund and Tackling Child Poverty.”

He added the Scottish government will continue to support employment and training programs to support young people.
