ActionAid Nigeria says it has positively touched the lives of one million people in its five-year programme in Kebbi from 2019 to 2024.

Andrew Mamedu, country director, ActionAid Nigeria (AAN), made this known at the Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project closeout and dissemination ceremony in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

Mr Mamedu, represented by the AAN deputy country director, Suwaiba Dankabo, said, “The projects have touched the lives of one million individuals, including women, girls, boys and persons with disabilities, with a significant investment of N291.3 million.

”We have provided direct support to 725,147 women and girls across communities in 18 local government areas.”

He explained that the project has been driven by an unwavering commitment to empower women, challenge entrenched cultural practices, and promote gender equality since its inception in 2019.

”This is done through the invaluable support of Global Affairs Canada and the collaborative efforts of over 100 women’s rights organisations, inclusive of the three local women’s rights organisations and 12 community-based organisations here in Kebbi,” Mr Mamedu said.

He said the achievement was a testament to the power of collaboration, the unwavering dedication of all the partners, stakeholders and community members, and the conducive environment provided by the state government.

The country director commended Governor Nasir Idris and the state Ministry of Women Affairs for providing the opportunity to work in the state.

In his remarks, the permanent secretary, cabinet and political affairs, Dahiru Zaki, appreciated the NGO and other partners for the numerous interventions during the programme in the state.

”I cannot thank you enough, as you have contributed immensely in the areas of financial investment, women and girls empowerment, addressing gender-based violence and women’s political participation, among others,” he said.

On his part, the Emir of Gwandu, Muhammadu Iliyasu-Bashar, represented by Abdullahi Umar, “Wazirin Gwandu,” thanked the NGO for the intervention and support, especially for women, girls, boys and persons with disabilities in the state.
