Afenifere faults extension of Sunday Igboho’s incarceration

Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere has registered its displeasure with the Beninese authorities for extending the detention of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho Adeyemo.
In a statement on Tuesday, the group’s spokesperson Jare Ajayi argued that it was illegal to extend the incarceration of Mr Igboho who was yet to be convicted of any offence.
“Igboho has spent about 204 days in Benin detention. This is much longer than it should be for a person who had not been convicted of any offence and a person who is not a criminal by any standard,” Mr Ajayi in the statement said.
Citing the World Justice Report that placed Benin as one of the countries with abject disregard for the rule of law, Mr Ajayi asked the Beninese government to “rescind the ruling by its court in order to redeem its receding image on its respect for the rule of law.”
Yomi Alliyu, counsel to Mr Igboho had over the weekend announced that the country’s government extended the incarceration of Mr Igboho by another six months.
Mr Alliyu alleged that the country renewed the detention without any hearing.
“The government of the Republic of Benin has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria,” counsel to Mr Igboho said.
The secessionist agitator has been in detention since his arrest at the Cotonou airport on his way to Germany, after fleeing Nigeria amid the declaration that he was wanted by the SSS..
