Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany has called for the speedy delivery of heavy weaponry to his war-torn country.

Andriy Melnyk said arms promised by the German government had  yet to arrive, 100 days after the start of the Russian invasion.

“If we’re honest, 100 days of war and to date not a single piece of heavy equipment has been delivered to Ukraine from Germany,” said Mr Melnyk.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday announced that his country would send weapons such as the Iris-T air defence system to Ukraine.

Ukraine said the first weapons would probably not arrive until the end of June.

“You can see how dicey the situation is,” he said.

Germany also wants to deliver four multiple rocket launchers from Bundeswehr stocks.

The commitment was  supported by a narrow majority of people in Germany, according to a representative survey by the research institute YouGov.

According to the survey, 52 per cent have fully supported the announcement, while 33 per cent opposed it.
