After Peoples Gazette’s report, university recalls students suspended for social media posts
Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers has lifted the one academic year suspension on two students over comments on social media two days after Peoples Gazette reported the issue.
The school management on Wednesday announced the suspension of Sunday Okpoko of the political science department and Chibuzor Remmy of education management on Facebook.
Sunday Okpoko was suspended for calling on students to demand a suspension of the final year examination, Chibuzor Remmy was suspended for calling on students to protest against school authorities’ failure to make banking easier for students.
In a statement issued on Friday by the school spokesperson, Ngozi Okiridu, the institution management lifted the suspension based on the appeals from well-meaning individuals.
“The Management, however, warns that henceforth, any student who does anything capable of bringing the university to public ridicule will be disciplined according to the rules and regulations of the university,” the statement said.
The students had explained how the school authorities initially ignored apologies from their parents after they were found in breach of the arbitrary rules.
But following the Gazette’s report that drew online outrage against the school’s vice-chancellor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, the management decided to back down on its controversial disciplinary action to prevent further backlash.
