The Nigerian Correctional Service has empowered five inmates in Akwa Ibom with essential starter packs to support their reintegration into society and promote sustainable livelihoods after being discharged.

The controller of the command, Frank Okonkwo, during the presentation at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Uyo, reaffirmed NCoS’s unwavering commitment to rehabilitation as a core mandate of the NCoS Act, 2019, according to a statement on Friday.

Mr Okonkwo reiterated that inmate empowerment remains one of the most impactful pathways to reducing recidivism and enhancing public safety.

He said that the command had continued to strengthen its vocational and skills-acquisition programmes to ensure that inmates were not only trained, but also equipped with the tools needed to begin a new chapter.

“When inmates are trained and empowered, we are not just releasing individuals back into society; we are releasing skilled, productive citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to their communities. This is how we build a safer and better society,” Mr Okonkwo said.

He said the empowerment programme, implemented in collaboration with strategic partners, also underscores the service drive to strengthen rehabilitation and reform initiatives across the state command.

He added that the command remains committed to transforming lives, promoting second chances, and ensuring that every empowered inmate becomes a symbol of positive change in society.

According to him, the beneficiaries trained in hairdressing, tailoring, barbing, and received professional starter kits to enable them to begin their chosen trades immediately.

He said that out of the five empowered individuals, two have already been discharged, while the remaining three are scheduled for discharge between now and January 2026.
