Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos on Friday said the shanties near the Alaba International Market were gutted by fire, not shops located in the market.

While reacting to a news article attributed to a statement from Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mr Hundeyin said the police raided a criminal hideout in the shanties close to the market and made some arrests.

“Police officers from Ojo Division raided shanties around the market, arrested suspected criminals and recovered some weapons,” Mr Hundeyin tweeted.

“The shanties were thereafter set on fire. Alaba Int’l Market is NOT on fire.”

Mr Hundeyin did not state who set the fire.
