American singer Britney Spears charged with DUI

American singer Britney Spears has been charged with driving under the influence following her recent arrest in California.
The Ventura County district attorney’s office filed one misdemeanour count of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs against the singer on Thursday.
She is scheduled to be arraigned on May 4, although she is not required to appear in person due to the minor nature of the charge.
Prosecutors said the decision on whether she will attend the hearing will be made between the singer and her legal representative.
“Whether or not Ms Spears will appear at the hearing will be a decision made between her and her attorney,” the district attorney’s office said, noting that the option to skip an in-person appearance is available in such cases.
The charge follows the 44-year-old singer’s arrest in March after she was said to be driving erratically at high speed on a California motorway and showed signs of impairment during tests.
The charge comes shortly after she reportedly checked into a rehabilitation facility voluntarily.
