Anambra Gov Poll: Transport fares, foodstuff prices stable in Onitsha

Prices of foodstuffs and transport fares remain stable on Friday in Onitsha, the economic hub of Anambra State, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
On Fruday, it was observed that economic activities were in top gear, as there were no cases of panic buying or hike in transportation fare across Onitsha.
Prices of food items, activities at motor parks, transportation fare, across Onitsha metropolis remained stable.
Speaking during an interview, some residents noted that there was no need for panic buying or increase in transportation fares as security had improved in the state.
A resident, Donatus Obidihe, while reacting to the situation in Onitsha ahead of Saturday’s governorship election said that the citizens had suffered forms of insecurity before and they had learnt from it.
According to him, most people in Onitsha metropolis are traders and hold their business dearly.
He stated, “The people had suffered a lot of insecurity in the past and they had learnt from it, elections would come and go and the people will remain.”
A driver, Emeka Okoye, who plies Old Road to Onitsha Main market, attributed the stable transportation fares to stable economic activities, saying that passengers were more for all the drivers.
“Why will any driver hike price of transportation when he has enough passengers on the road wanting to board to their various destination. The prices of fuel or diesel remain the same, it be wicked of any driver to take advantage of election to increase prices,” he said.
A motor parts deal, Paul Enemuo, stated that activities at the park were unchanged as people have no need to travel out of the state due to fear of attacks.
“Why will anyone want to travel out of the state to their respective villages due to fear of insecurity arising from their election? As you can see, activities at our park remain the same, everybody is minding their business, and there is no need for price hike,” he said.
