The member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Prof. Lilian Orogbu, urged fathers to use their permanent voter cards (PVCs) to elect credible leaders.

Ms Orogbu, a Labour Party representative, made the call on Sunday at the Church of Pentecost, Anglican Communion, Awka Diocese during a service to mark the 2026 Father’s Day.

The lawmaker said exercising their voting franchise was a veritable way fathers could perform their duties of home building.

She stated, “Fathers should lead by example as heads of their homes through active participation in apolitical and social activities. Ensuring that credible leaders are elected would make children see fathers as great home builders and emulate their steps in sustaining nation building. Nigeria definitely need God’s intervention in its wellbeing and stability.’’

She urged citizens to hold government accountable and ensure that those without positive impacts on their lives, were not elected.

“Fathers should ensure their families get their PVCs and participate actively in the electoral process. Nigerians would hopefully access life-changing facilities once the President Bola Tinubu’s administration releases approved funds for various developmental projects across the nation,” she said.

The Vicar of the church, Rev. Chukwuma Oranye urged fathers to actively oversee activities in their homes to instil discipline in their children.

Mr Oranye said that it was important that fathers partake in training their children to imbibe morals in them for a better society.

“God has mandated fathers to pilot the affairs of their homes, and they should not turn away from their responsibilities. Fathers should lay footprints worthy of emulation across generations and promote religious values,” he said.

A parishioner, Ndidi Okeke-Efi, described the celebration as worthy as it patched cracks in homes and bring couples together.

She said, “Father’s Day celebrations unite families, especially bonding children and parents.”
