Angélique Kidjo becomes first African to receive star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Grammy Award-winning musician Angelique Kidjo has been honoured as the first African to receive a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The ‘Agolo’ crooner was honoured on Tuesday with the 2,8254th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the singer was recognised in the Recording category for her legacy on the global stage, paving the way for other African artistes.
Variety correspondent Angelique Jackson hosted the ceremony, and the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer was joined by Academy actor William Defoe, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr, and her family and other colleagues.
Ava Martinez, the Hollywood Walk of Fame producer, described the singer as an extraordinary artist who has inspired people worldwide, with the honour recognising her global influence and contributions to music.
“Angélique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents. We are proud to honour her as the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her remarkable contributions to music and culture around the world,” said Ms Martinez.
The 66-year-old built a career spanning over four decades and produced 18 studio albums.
In 2008, she became the first African woman to win a Grammy Award in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category for her album Djin Djin.
She is also known for her humanitarian service as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador, a role she has held since 2002, supporting girls’ education in Africa.
