Mali’s military leader, Colonel Assimi Goïta, has dissolved political parties in the country amid calls for transition to civil rule.

A statement read on the state broadcast station on Tuesday announced the military regime’s dissolution of political parties.

It stated, “All meetings of members of political parties and organisations of a political character are dissolved across the national territory.’’

This development came five years after Mr Goïta assumed power.

With Mr Goïta’s regime under pressure to restore democratic rule in Mali, a national conference held last month recommended Mr Goita to remain president until 2030.

However, the national conference was boycotted by major opposition parties in the country.

Since he assumed power, Mr Goita has formed alliance other neighbouring countries in the Sahel Region, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, withdrawing its membership of ECOWAS over pressure to restore civil rule in Mali
