Australia’s mining firm BHP sacks 48 workers for sexual harassment

World-leading mining company BHP says over 48 workers have been fired for sexual assault and harassment at its Australia mining camps in less than two years.
BBC reported that the renowned company is now being carefully examined, following the amplified rate of sexual harassment court cases that were said to have occurred at its various mining locations.
The company is dominated by a large number of male staff amongst few females, who then are deployed to remote regions in a “village camp-style accommodation” to work.
A miner confirmed that there have been allegations of two rapes, one attempted rape and three cases of forced kissing or groping.
Another BHP miner concurs with the ongoing sexual harassment ordeals, claiming that among over 13,500 staff, the company had received 18 reports of sexual assault and 73 of sexual harassment in the space of two years.
“Female workers had endured unwanted touching and advances, and inappropriate texts and pictures from colleagues,” BHP clarified.
In its defence, BHP says it has fired and reported more than 73 cases of sexual assault and harassment to the police.
The company said it has also invested over $300 million since 2019 to provide a more secure campsite for its workers to curtail issues of sexual harassment.
The company was reported to have said that it was deeply sorry and went ahead to apologise “unreservedly to those who have experienced, or continue to experience, any form of sexual harassment in our workplaces.”
Moving forward, the company has employed other measures to handle the situation, such as installing CCTV cameras, putting chains on room doors, and limiting a worker’s alcohol intake in a day, as well as increasing its female staff in general and at senior management level.
