A new 63,000-seat stadium will be built in Brisbane for the 2032 Olympic Games, overturning previous plans.

Queensland State Premier David Crisafulli announced on Tuesday that the stadium would be located in Victoria Park, an area known for its green spaces and recreational facilities, sparking protests from citizens.

The decision followed the completion of a 100-day independent review of venues and infrastructure.

Earlier plans to renovate two existing stadiums were abandoned, with iconic cricket venue The Gabba set to be demolished after the games.

While the regional government had initially rejected building a new stadium, citing concerns over the cost amid rising housing and living expenses, estimates now suggest the Victoria Park stadium will cost around 3.7 billion Australian dollars ($2.3 billion).

Protests quickly erupted, citing environmental concerns and the site’s significance to Indigenous Australians.

The new stadium will host athletic events, along with the opening and closing ceremonies, and later serve as the home for local cricket and Australian Rules football teams.

Other Olympic facilities, including a tennis arena and water sports centre, will also be constructed.

The International Olympic Committee has urged hosts to prioritise sustainability and reuse existing venues whenever possible.
