The education secretary of the Bauchi State Local Education Authority, Talatu Yakubu, has called for increased enrolment of girls in schools, highlighting the government’s commitment to providing quality education for all school-age children.

Ms Yakubu made the appeal on Thursday during the maiden Speech and Prize-Giving Day organised by Government Nursery and Primary School, Federal Low-Cost, Bauchi, to mark the end of the 2025 academic session.

Ms Yakubu urged parents and guardians to take full advantage of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) programme, saying it was designed to support girls’ education.

She said, “Let us enrol our girls to benefit from the AGILE programme. The government has made quality education accessible, so parents must ensure enrolment, retention, and completion of school for their children.’’

Earlier, the headmistress of the school, Jummai Mohamed, emphasised the importance of hosting such events, stating that they served as a platform to motivate pupils to discover and develop their potential from an early age.

She also highlighted the school’s academic and extracurricular achievements and thanked the Bauchi State governor for his support of the education sector.

She, however, appealed for increased investment in school infrastructure and staffing to improve learning outcomes.

In his remarks, the community head of Federal Low-Cost, Mohammed Aliyu, commended the school authorities for their dedication and reminded parents of their critical role in their children’s academic performance.

He encouraged parents to continue supporting both their children and the government in prioritising education as a key pathway to development.

A cross-section of pupils and stakeholders were recognised with awards for academic excellence, dedication, and contributions to the school community.

Ms Yakubu was also honoured with the title of “Motivational Leader” by the school.

Highlights of the event included cultural dances, drama presentations, and other colourful performances.
