The Enugu State government, in collaboration with the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation (CELI), has organised a capacity training for smart green school teachers in the state on the Nigerian Learning Passport (NLP).

The three-day training programme, which began on Monday and expected to end on Wednesday (today), is supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The programme designed to train CELI mentors and experiential learning innovators on scaling NLP in Enugu smart green schools is facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Microsoft GPE.

Speaking during the programme, the UNICEF coordinator for the Nigerian Learning Passport, Harold Kpolime, said NLP was an online platform aimed at training smart green school teachers on the NLP.

According to him, it has courses in digital literacy, digital learning, and also on how to use artificial intelligence. 

He stated that it was training the trainers, who would transfer the training to the teachers.

“This is the 21st century, and we expect that at the end of the training all our teachers should be digitally literate,” he said.

Also speaking, an education specialist at UNICEF, Enugu Field Office, Believe Ekeh, said UNICEF had always partnered with the Enugu State government in its education initiatives.

“What we are doing here is to support the state government through SUBEB to integrate NLP into its learning in the smart green schools.

“We have been supporting the state government’s initiatives in education; this is not the first time.

“If you don’t build the capacity of the personnel, then the physical structures are just in vain; hence, UNICEF supports to build the capacity of teachers,” he said.

Similarly, permanent board member, Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), Ego Ajah, said the training would improve the digital knowledge of the teachers.

A director in the state’s Ministry of Education, Nkem Agbo, thanked both the Enugu State government and its partners for the initiative.

A trainee, Levi Ojinweke, expressed happiness over the training, saying that it was the way forward for teachers in the smart green schools.

“This is the way to go; I thank our able governor and all the collaborators,” he said.
