The Bauchi State Agency for Nomadic Education (BASANE) has called for closer collaboration with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to fast track rehabilitation of 245 learning centres across the state.

Iliyasu Zwall, the permanent commissioner in charge of the agency who spoke with journalists on Wednesday, disclosed that about 245 of the 513 existing nomadic schools were in dire need of reconstruction and renovation to guarantee conducive teaching and learning atmosphere.

Mr Zwall said that 233 learning centres were operating in temporary shades; while 45 were in mud structures. The structures were donated by the communities.

The Commissioner stated that out of the total number of the schools only 34  were in good shape, adding that the agency has a total of 1,389 teachers and 99,328 pupils spread across the 20 local government areas of the state.

According to him, such collaboration between the agency and SUBEB will encourage optimal performances in the schools.

Mr Zwall also commended the efforts of 12 governors for accepting to establish the Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) projects in their states.

The initiative, he said, would encourage the nomads to settle in a permanent place as well as encourage enrollment and retention in schools.

He advocated for the establishment of grazing reserves, cattle routes and cottage industries in nomadic settlements to enable them to process their goods.
