The Benue State Government is developing a livestock project to unlock the economic potential inherent in the sub-sector.

The Director-General, Bureau of Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control, Dr Aondoakaa Asambe, made the disclosure in a statement in Makurdi.

Mr Asambe said the state government was committed to advancing sustainable development and economic prosperity through the project.

The DG described the livestock development project as a game-changer for the state and a sure, quick way for an economic turnaround.

He said the project outlined strategic initiatives to address critical challenges in the crops and livestock sub-sectors.

According to him, the project would resolve herder-farmer conflicts by fostering structured livestock management and peaceful coexistence.

Mr Asambe said it would curtail animal rustling, secure the investments of livestock owners, and drive economic prosperity by transforming Benue into a hub of livestock productivity and trade.

The DG stated that the project would also empower the youth with employment opportunities in livestock production, processing, and trade.

He said, “The bureau is pleased to announce plans to improve our local breeds of animals through crossbreeding with stronger foreign breeds. This initiative will enhance productivity, resilience, and the profitability of livestock farming, benefiting rural and urban communities alike. Furthermore, the swift establishment of the Bureau of Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control and the launch of the Anyam Nyôr Joint Security Taskforce are bold steps taken to ensure peace, stability, and security in rural areas.

These measures are designed to end rural unrest, protect our farmlands, and set the foundation for sustainable economic growth.’’

The DG further urged the people to align with the transformative efforts and actively participate in the innovative programmes that the bureau would soon unveil.

He stated, “Together, we can unlock the full potential of our livestock resources and create a future of lasting peace and shared prosperity. The bureau appreciates the support and trust of all stakeholders as we chart a new course for livestock development in Benue State.’’
