Boko Haram abducts UN humanitarian worker
Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attacked commuters along Damaturu-Maiduguri Highway and abducted a United Nation worker, Idris Garba.
The attack occurred on Saturday around 8:30 a.m. near Matari village between Minok and Jakana, Borno.
AIT and other media outlets in Borno cited witnesses as claiming that the terrorists emerged on the highway in military fatigues and barricaded the road with three Toyota Hilux vans and motorcycles.
Mr. Garba was reportedly abducted by the terrorists even though he tried to conceal his identity as a UN worker. It was unclear where he was taken to or whether the abductors have called in for a ransom.
Police spokesman in Borno State did not return multiple calls and messages from Peoples Gazette for comments. The UN has yet to confirm the abduction of its worker.
Last month, Governor Babagana Zulum claimed that security has improved in Borno, ignoring the worsening spate of deadly attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups. Mr. Zulum himself has had his convoy attacked at least three times by Boko Haram terrorists over the past one year, claiming at least 30 of his security and civilian aides.
