Boko Haram attacks military base, carts away weapons in Borno
The Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) wing of jihadist fighters Boko Haram have reportedly overran a military formation and carted away weapons in Borno.
The incident occured Tuesday evening at Kwamdi village in Damboa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
Daily Trust, Wednesday reported that the daring terrorists stormed the military formation in 10 utility vehicles.
The news outlet disclosed that the insurgents blazed some military equipments after a gun duel with the troops.
It was gathered that the terrorists burnt down one Amour Personnel Carrier (APC) and a gun truck as they carted away an unspecified number of weapons.
The report cited Hamidu Abu, a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), as saying the attackers’ motives was targeted at the military camp and not residents residing in the southern axis of the state.
Mr Abu disclosed that the military formation was razed down by the terrorists as they made away with arms and ammunition.
“They came at about 4:00 p.m. and due to the sand storms, it was difficult for soldiers to repel them.
They burnt down the base including APC and four other vehicles,” the local vigilante said.
The newly appointed spokesman for the army, Onyema Nwachukwu, who resumed on Wednesday, did not immediately reply when contacted Wednesday by Peoples Gazette.
ISWAP terror group is a faction of Boko Haram group that emerged in 2016. The group which specialises in attacking military bases and formations pledged its allegiance to Islamic State.
The deadly group in a viral video June 7 claimed to have killed Abubakar Shekau, leader of Boko Haram group.
ISWAP fighters have launched numerous attacks on frontline security operatives that has led the the deaths of many.
