BRICS Coalition: Trump threatens to sanction Nigeria with additional 10% tariff

President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened to punish BRICS and allied nations, including Nigeria, over anti-U.S. policies.
President Bola Tinubu is in Brazil attending the BRICS Summit and seeking more equitable global financial and healthcare systems, according to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Monday.
“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an additional 10% Tariff,” Mr Trump said in a post on Truth Social. There will be no exceptions to this policy, Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
This comes after Brazilian president and the current chairman of BRICS, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, condemned the Trump administration’s recent worldwide tariff increase imposed on almost all countries around the world.
“If international governance does not reflect the new multipolar reality of the 21st century, it is up to BRICS to help bring it up to date,” Mr Lula said at the ongoing summit of the alliance, pioneered by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Mr Trump was quick to respond to his Brazilian counterpart’s comments, vowing to impose additional 10 per cent tariffs on BRICS and its partners, which he has repeatedly warned against engaging in anti-American policies.
Mr Trump had imposed a 14 per cent reciprocity tariff on Nigeria in April 2025, which became the ninth BRICS partner country in January 2025 and could face an additional 10 per cent over its alliance with the developing nations’ bloc.
Nigeria’s affiliation with the BRICS nations could further anger the American leader amid ongoing consideration to place another 36 countries, including the West African nation, on a general visa ban to the United States.
