Burna Boy wins BET ‘Best International Act’

Grammy-winning Nigerian artiste Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu aka Burna Boy has won another international award at the 21st annual BET Awards in the ‘Best International Act’ category.
Other nominees in the category were Aya Nakamura, Diamond Platnumz, Emicida, Headie One, Wizkid, Young T & Bugsey, Youssoupha.
The BET Awards, which recognises Black excellence in entertainment, was held on Sunday at the Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre.
Burna Boy was present on stage to receive his award alongside his mother, Bose Ogulu.
“This is my third one back to back. You get me? Love you BET, no stopping,” he said in a backstage video after receiving the prestigious award.
Last March, Burna Boy won the Grammy for ‘Twice as Tall’ under the Best Global Music Album category.
The Nigerian star beat other nominees in the category, including Malian band Tinariwen and U.S. band Antibalas.
It is the second Grammy nomination for Burna Boy. His first nomination was in 2019 for his ‘African Giant’ album, in the same category. Though he lost at the awards last year, music critics predicted that he had a better chance of winning this year.
In 2013, Burna Boy released his first studio album, ‘LIFE’ — an acronym for ‘Leaving an Impact For Eternity.’ Burna Boy followed the release of LIFE with two other albums, ‘Redemption’ in 2015 and ‘Outside’ in 2018, including Kanye West-endorsed song, ‘Ye,’ which had over 129 million views on YouTube.
After ‘Ye’ garnered the attention of the international music community, his 2019 ‘African Giant’ album got further acclaim.
It earned him his first Grammy nomination, a win at the MTV EMA, and a nod from former U.S. President Barack Obama (who put it on his favourite songs of 2019 list).
