UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that pubs, clubs, and live music venues across England would benefit from a 20 per cent cut in business rates from April 2027.

Mr Burnham said the discount would apply to nearly 32,000 hospitality businesses and allow a pub to save about £1,100 annually.

He added that the measure is part of his administration’s initiative to ease cost pressures on households and businesses.

The prime minister, who announced the relief during a visit to The George Tavern, a historic pub and live music venue in Shadwell, East London, said the measure was aimed at reducing costs for working people and communities.

He said the rates overhaul would be funded by reviewing reliefs for antisocial businesses, such as vape shops and online marketplaces that failed to comply with tax obligations.

“This government will back the businesses that people want to see in their communities,” Mr Burnham said. “For too long, governments have stood by while cherished venues have disappeared from our local high streets. Today, I am changing that.”

He added, “I said I would protect pubs and local high streets, the beating heart of our communities, and that is what we will do. What we are announcing today is just the start as we work to bring back hope across the country.”

During his first cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the prime minister pledged to lead a “cost-of-living government.”
