The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to defending the nation’s democracy.

Mr Oluyede stated this at the closing ceremony of the Chief of Defence Staff Democracy Day volleyball championship 2026 in Abuja.

He stressed the importance of professionalism, unity, physical fitness and non-kinetic engagements in addressing contemporary security challenges.

Mr Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Sabiru Lawal, said the championship underscored the military’s commitment to promoting values essential for national security and democratic stability.

According to him, the competition came at a critical time, when Nigeria continues to confront diverse security threats that require both kinetic and non-kinetic responses.

He said events such as sporting competitions contribute to building physical fitness, discipline, resilience and teamwork among military personnel.

The CDS noted that these qualities remain indispensable for operational readiness and effective service delivery in defence of the nation’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.

“Volleyball is much more than a game. It fosters concentration, endurance, resilience and collective effort, which are equally essential in the discharge of our responsibilities as defenders of our nation,” he said.

Mr Oluyede added that the championship also strengthened camaraderie, professionalism and unity among personnel of the Armed Forces.

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Administration, Gideon Kashim, said Democracy Day offered an opportunity to reflect on the values of unity, professionalism and service that define the military.

Mr Kashim said sporting activities remained an effective platform for strengthening cooperation, mutual understanding and esprit de corps among the services.

According to him, physical fitness and mental resilience are critical requirements for military personnel tasked with safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and democratic order.

He added that sports also provide opportunities for recreation, talent development and the promotion of healthy rivalry within the Armed Forces.

The championship formed part of the activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration and featured personnel drawn from the various services of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The Nigerian Navy male and female teams emerged champions, while the Nigerian Army male and female teams came second.
