Censorship: Google removes Parler app used by Trump supporters

Some argue that these companies were wielding too much power that could be used to target causes unjustly.

• January 9, 2021

Google has removed a social media app, Parler from its play store. The app is commonly used by supporters of U.S President Donald Trump.

This move comes at a time Mr. Trump is being yanked off major social media platforms following his ceaseless outbursts on the outcome of the November 3 presidential election which he lost to Joe Biden.

Many of the platforms claim Mr. Trump makes statements that are capable of inciting violence and are in violation of civic engagement rules of those mediums.

The invasion of Capitol Hill by Trump supporters on Wednesday, resulting in near-truncation of Mr. Biden’s certification by the Congress and death of five persons appears to have fuelled the latest move against Mr.Trump by tech giants.

Twitter on Friday permanently suspended Mr. Trump’s handle for breaching its rules. The company said it banned Trump’s account to avoid further incitement of violence.

Peoples Gazette reports that Facebook on Thursday also deleted all Mr. Trump’s and his associates’ accounts,  including his campaign accounts for “violence inciting posts.”

Google in a statement said the removal of Parler is to protect users.

“Outstanding policies require that apps displaying user-generated content have moderation policies and enforcement that removes egregious content like posts that incite violence”, it said, adding that all developers agree to the terms and Parker has been reminded recently.

The global tech company said it is aware of Parler’s continued postings that seek to incite ongoing violence in the U.S., India Today reports.

The online newspaper reports that Apple has informed Parler of plans to remove its content if it fails to comply with its content-moderation requirements.

The Gazette learnt that Apple  also threatened to ban Parler unless it comes with full moderation plans within 24hours.

CNN reports that platforms like Snapchat also blocked Mr. Trump from posting, and Reddit suspended the popular subreddit “/donaldtrump.”

Parler Chief Executive, John Matze said the company won’t cave to politically motivated companies and individuals who hate free speech, adding that Mr. Trump is not a user of the platform.

Although Parler has been removed from the Google play store, users can still install it from Android based-app.

There are concerns that the latest wave of ban against Mr. Trump and his supporters could transmute to censorship of free speech by tech companies who own communication platforms.

Some argue that these companies were wielding too much power that could be used to target causes unjustly.
