China handed over a batch of emergency humanitarian supplies to Sri Lanka on Tuesday to support communities affected by recent flooding.

The Chinese ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, officially handed over the supplies in Colombo, which include tents, beds, generators, and water pumps.

Mr Qi said the aid was intended to improve living conditions for displaced communities and enhance Sri Lanka’s capacity to respond to future natural disasters.

“China can share valuable expertise and advanced technologies with Sri Lanka to strengthen the country’s resilience in disaster prevention,” he said, noting China’s extensive experience in post-disaster reconstruction and risk management.

He added that China was willing to explore deeper cooperation with Sri Lanka in areas such as satellite meteorological image sharing, disaster early warning systems, and disaster prevention and mitigation.

Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary, Sampath Thuyacontha, expressed gratitude for the timely support, stressing the importance of international partnerships as climate change continued to increase disaster risks across the region.
