China reaffirms support for Iran’s sovereignty, nuclear rights

China will continue to support Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and dignity and in resisting power politics and bullying, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday.
He added that China backs Iran in defending its legitimate rights and interests through political negotiation.
Mr Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Tianjin, northern China.
Mr Araghchi is in the country for the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states.
Mr Wang is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
Mr Wang emphasised that, as a comprehensive strategic partner, China was committed to deepening mutual trust, strengthening cooperation, and promoting the steady and long-term development of China-Iran relations.
He also underscored the importance of good neighbourliness and friendship in Iran’s regional engagement.
Mr Araghchi expressed gratitude for China’s “invaluable support” and voiced Iran’s backing for China’s role as rotating president of the SCO, especially in preparing for the upcoming Tianjin Summit.
He said Iran was ready to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and continue mutual support between the two nations.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue. Mr Araghchi reaffirmed that Iran had no intention to develop nuclear weapons but remained firm on its right to peaceful use of nuclear energy.
He said Iran was willing to resume negotiations with all parties based on equality and respect in pursuit of a political resolution.
Mr Wang reiterated China’s opposition to the use or threat of force and emphasised resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation.
He acknowledged Iran’s commitment to non-proliferation, respected its peaceful nuclear rights, and appreciated its diplomatic approach.
He said that China would continue to play a constructive role in advancing a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue and ensuring regional stability in the Middle East.
