Men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State have arrested a carpenter, Babatunde Oluwasola,  for alleged human trafficking.

Mr Oluwasola, 56, popularly known as ‘Osanle’ from Osun State, was arrested alongside Fowowe Dada, a trader, after the duo allegedly trafficked three girls to Libya.

Daniel Aidamenbor, the spokesperson for the NSCDC in Ondo, revealed the arrest of the suspects in a statement on Monday.

Mr Aidamenbor said the main suspect, Mr Oluwasola, who resides in Akure, recruited the three young girls from Akure to Libya in April 2023.

He added that the suspect got one of the girls with the help of Mrs Fowowe, popularly known as “Iya Alaso” among her fellow traders in the market.

“The victims who travelled through the desert to Libya called Mr Babatunde through the agent that received them two weeks after they departed from Akure, Ondo State, to inform him of their arrival in Libya.

“But one of the victims, a 15-year-old girl, until her departure, lived with her parents in Akure, and she left without telling anyone about her journey.

“It’s upon her arrival in Libya that she discovered that the situation she got wasn’t what she bargained for; hence, she had to reach out to her father, who had been looking for her, and he reported the case to NSCDC Ondo State Command,” Mr Aidamenbor said in the copy of the statement obtained by Peoples Gazette.

He, however, added that the suspects allegedly made their confessional statements, revealing that they would be transferred to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) for further action after investigation.
