Nigerian athletes delivered yet another remarkable performance on Wednesday as Goodness Nwachukwu won the country’s seventh gold medal and Jessica Oji took silver in the women’s shot put at her debut for Nigeria, the first since 2006.

Nwachukwu clinched the gold medal, breaking her F42 World Record by more than three metres, launching the Discus out at 39.66m to secure the Commonwealth F42-44/F61-64 women’s discus throw in Glasgow.

Her latest feat increases Nigeria’s gold medal tally to seven, making it one of the country’s strongest Commonwealth Games outings in recent years.

Nineteen-year-old Oji secured the silver medal on her debut for Nigeria, ending the nation’s 20-year wait for a Commonwealth medal in the women’s shot put since Vivian Chukwuemeka won in Melbourne in 2006.

The young athlete’s success adds to Nigeria’s growing tally of medals at the Commonwealth Games, especially in women’s events.

Female athletes who secured podium places include Temitope Adeshina, who earned a bronze medal in the women’s high jump, and Oyesade Olatoye, who claimed bronze in the women’s hammer throw.

Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Rilwan Idris each won a gold medal in para powerlifting; meanwhile, Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal won gold in weightlifting.
