Community service, mentorship key to national development: Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Nigerians to shift their focus from just achieving personal success to making a difference in their communities.
Mr Sanwo-Olu made this appeal at an event organised by the Epe Club in honour of Shakiru Seriki, a prominent politician and member of the Governance Advisory Council held at Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday.
Mr Sanwo-Olu noted that true leadership involves mentoring others and creating opportunities that outlive individual achievements.
The governor commended the club for honouring Mr Seriki, noting that his life exemplifies leadership, service, and commitment to community development.
“We must empower not just our families but our communities. We must be mentors and raise mentees who will continue the work of development. Baba Bamu and his contemporaries have mentored many people, and that is why they are celebrated today,” the governor said.
Mr Sanwo-Olu urged young people to remain hopeful and proactive, focusing on opportunities rather than negativity. He highlighted Nigeria’s growing adoption of technology and innovation, particularly among the youth, as a positive sign for the country’s future.
Mr Sanwo-Olu further urged Nigerians to look beyond negative narratives, while reaffirming his confidence in Nigeria’s steady progress.
“This country is progressing. Our president is doing well, infrastructure is expanding, and many initiatives being implemented today will change lives. Young people must see opportunities, seize them, and contribute positively,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said.
The chairman of the occasion, education minister Tunji Alausa described Mr Seriki as an iconic figure who embodies industry, mentorship, and commitment to national development.
Mr Alausa noted that celebrating individuals like Mr Seriki strengthens national values, inspires future leaders, and promotes sustainable development. He pointed out that true success was not just about personal achievements, but about contributing to commerce, education, and community progress.
The minister commended the Epe Club for providing guidance and role models. He stressed the importance of shared responsibility among government, institutions, and communities in nurturing young people through education, values, and positive examples.
