A Magistrate’s Court in Jos, on Monday, sentenced a 23-year-old trader, Ishah Mustapha, to 14 months in prison for stealing a car battery.

The magistrate, Irene Pati, summarily tried and sentenced the convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Ms Pati, in her judgment, however, gave the convict the option of a N80,000 fine or spending one year in prison.

She also ordered him to pay a compensation of N70,000 or spend an additional two months in default.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ijuptil Thiawur, told the court that the case was reported at the ‘C’ Division Police Station on September 2 by the complainant, Moshood Bashir.

Mr Thiawur said that the convict and his friend, Haruna Ismail, now at large, conspired and stole the battery valued at N52,000 from the complainant’s car before they were caught.

He said that the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.
