Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki on Friday said schools resumption will remain suspended in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state.

The federal government had scheduled resumption of schools across the country for January 18 regardless of the raging second wave of coronavirus.

School resumption will, however, not happen in Edo State on January 18 as the state government has opted otherwise.

Mr. Obaseki in a tweet on Friday announced postponement of school resumption, adding that new COVID-19 safety protocols has been issued for operation of markets, clubs, religious and social gathering in the state.

“We have suspended schools’ resumption and reviewed the subsisting curfew to 10pm – 5am daily, to halt the spread of #COVID19,” Mr. Obaseki said. “New guidelines have been issued for markets, the hospitality industry, night clubs, religious and social gatherings, the transport sector, etc.”

Edo State has recorded 3,189 cases and 124 deaths as a result of coronavirus. A total of 105,478 cases and 1405 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Nigeria since the first index case was reported in late February in 2020.

Globally, over 93millon cases and over 2millon deaths have been recorded as a result of coronavirus pandemic.
